Let's try something new....
FLIPGRID!
Flipgrid is an online tool to increase student engagement "that allows teachers to create 'grids' of short discussion-style questions that students respond to through recorded videos. Each grid is effectively a message board where teachers can pose a question and their students can post up to 90-second video responses that appear in a tiled 'grid' display" (from Common Sense Media website).
DIRECTIONS: I have set up a Flipgrid for EVERYONE! I'm not certain at this point how often I will use it, but I wanted to give this a try before we got further along in the quarter.
1)Go to this website: https://flipgrid.com/troopersss1 or click the link below.
2) The next page will say, "Shhh...this grid is locked". You will enter your first and last initials (if you have a double last name, you will enter three initials). NOTE: Some of you will have a number after your initials. I will hand out all Flipgrid login information on Friday, September 21st.
3) You are now on our Flipgrid page! You will see a box that says, "Best Book Ever!". Read the directions in the box, think of what you want to say, and then press the green PLUS button to begin recording!!
4) I will review each video before it is placed on our Flipgrid.
If you get a chance to record something while you aren't at school, please do so! I would love to hear what you have to say! This is NOT a requirement....just for fun!

Orientation Slides and Info
About Mrs. Rabb....Welcome to 6th grade! My name is Bettie Rabb, and I am thrilled to be your social studies teacher for this very first year at Apex Friendship Middle School. This marks my 9th year teaching, having previously taught 4th and 5th grades. Teaching social studies all day has been a dream of mine, as I am a passionate historian at heart. We will study ancient history thematically as well as chronologically, connecting past events with today's world issues and successes.
I am a second-career teacher, coming to the classroom after five years in local government and twelve years as a busy stay-at-home mom of four terrific kids (Emily, Will, Laura, and John, ages 23 to 15....whom I affectionately call the Rabblets). My husband Mike is a CPA working at Duke University (but, we are avid N.C. State fans....so...go PACK!). We also have a black-and-white cat named Dorothy (she’s kind of a ninja!)! In my spare time, I love to read, cook, and bake; play the piano; watch movies (especially Star Wars movies); visit the Outer Banks (or pretty much anywhere in NC); and spend time with my family and friends. It has always been my belief that all students can learn. As I’ve gotten older, a few other core beliefs have bubbled up: 1) Kids need to believe they can learn and that their brains can grow and are capable of learning new “stuff”. 2) Kids also need a place to test out ideas, explore new thinking, and build relationships. My job involves facilitating all these things in the classroom. We are going to have a magnificent time learning, laughing, succeeding, failing, and growing together this year! I can't wait to get started! Go Chargers! |
